This paper overviews the main principles of storage of solar energy for its subsequent long‐term consumption. The methods are separated into two groups, i.e., the thermal and photonic.

The principles of several energy storage methods and calculation of storage capacities are described. Sensible heat storage technologies, including water tank, underground, and packed-bed storage methods, are briefly reviewed.

This paper reviews different types of solar thermal energy storage (sensible heat, latent heat, and thermochemical storage) for low- (40–120 °C) and medium-to-high-temperature (120–1000 °C) applications.

The principles of several energy storage methods and calculation of storage capacities are described. Sensible heat storage technologies, including the use of water, underground and packed-bed are .

As shown in Figure 1, there are three main thermal energy storage technologies : sensible heat storage through a temperature change (sensible heat) of a material, latent heat storage through phase change (latent heat) of a material and thermochemical heat (chemical energy) by thermally inducing changes in materials’ chemical states.
