Solar string inverters are used to convert the DC power output from a string of solar panels to a usable AC power. String inverters are commonly used in residential and commercial installations. Recent improvements in semiconductor technology is allowing for string inverters with high power density (from 10s of kW to 100s of kW).

This paper presents a comprehensive review of various inverter topologies and control structure employed in PV applications with associated merits and demerits. The paper also gives the recent trends in the development of PV applications.
In this review, the global status of the PV market, classification of the PV system, configurations of the grid-connected PV inverter, classification of various inverter types, and topologies are discussed, described and presented in a schematic manner.
The different solar PV configurations, international/ national standards and grid codes for grid connected solar PV systems have been highlighted. The state-of-the-art features of multi-functional grid-connected solar PV inverters for increased penetration of solar PV power are examined.
In grid-connected photovoltaic systems, a key consideration in the design and operation of inverters is how to achieve high efficiency with power output for different power configurations. The requirements for inverter connection include: maximum power point, high efficiency, control power injected into the grid, and low total harmonic .
