The role of batteries in microgrids
Emerging forms of energy storage, like advanced batteries, can also be built on a small, local scale, providing another source of backup power that can unhook from the grid.

A key element is the ability to monitor, control, and optimize the performance of one or more battery modules within a storage system. The BMSS topic was identified in Q1 of the strategy map, which is considered important in the field studied.
This paper presents a review of the microgrid concept, classification and control strategies. Besides, various prospective issues and challenges of microgrid implementation are highlighted and explained. Finally, the important aspects of future microgrid research are outlined.
In addition, microgrids generally include a tertiary control layer to enable the economic and optimization operations for the microgrid, mainly focused on managing battery storage, distributed generation scheduling and dispatch, and managing import and export of electricity between the microgrid and the utility grid [39], [40], [44], [45].
Flow batteries store energy in aqueous electrolytes and act in a similar way to fuel cells. These batteries convert chemical energy into electrical energy by directing the flow of ions through a membrane caused by an oxidation-reduction reaction of two different liquids from separate tanks.
