Wind turbine rotor swept diameter
In 2023, the average rotor diameter of newly-installed wind turbines was over 133.8 meters (~438 feet)—longer than a football field, or about as tall as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Larger rotor diameters allow wind turbines to sweep more area, capture more wind, and produce more electricity.

Thus, the power available to a wind turbine is based on the density of the air (usually about 1.2 kg/m 3), the swept area of the turbine blades (picture a big circle being made by the spinning blades), and the velocity of the wind. Of these, clearly, the most variable input is wind speed.
The equation used to calculate wind turbine power is: Power (W) = 0.5 × ϱ × πr² × Cp × CF × v³. where ϱ is wind density in kg/m³, πr² is the swept area of the turbine, Cp is the power coefficient, CF is the capacity factor and v is the velocity of the wind in m/s.
wind power is directly proportional to v^3, air velocity cubed. Clipper Wind: wind power ∝ swept area. Swept area = πr^2 or π (d/2)^2 where d is the diameter. The blade length or radius of the Clipper Wind Liberty 2.5 MW Wind Turbine (C100) is 48.8 meters and a rotor diameter of 100meters.
The amount of power a horizontal-axis turbine will produce is determined by the diameter of its rotor. The diameter of the rotor defines its "swept area," or the quantity of wind intercepted by the turbine. The turbine's frame is the structure onto which the rotor, generator, and tail are attached.
