About Phase change solar energy storage

An effective method of storing thermal energy from solar is through the use of phase change materials (PCMs).

An effective method of storing thermal energy from solar is through the use of phase change materials (PCMs).

Phase change materials (PCMs) having a large latent heat during solid-liquid phase transition are promising for thermal energy storage applications. However, the relatively low thermal conductivity of the majority of promising PCMs (<10 W/(m ⋅ K)) limits the power density and overall storage efficiency.

Inspired by the thermoregulation mechanisms of polar bears, this work introduces composite PCMs with spectrally selective absorption to enhance solar thermal energy storage efficiency. These composite phase change materials (CPCMs), featuring densely packed SiC ceramic grains with high porosity, exhibit a thermal conductivity of up to 14 W m .

One of prospective techniques of storing solar energy is the application of phase change materials (PCMs). Unfortunately, prior to the large-scale practical application of this technology, it is necessary to resolve numerous problems at the research and development stage.

PCMs can play a significant role in storing higher amounts of energy, which is linked with the latent heat of the phase change. Also, PCMs support a target-oriented settling temperature by the fixed temperature of the phase change. The energy storage capacity of PCMs in the heat recovery of solar power plants is affected by several factors.
