Molten salts (MSs) thermal energy storage (TES) enables dispatchable solar energy in concentrated solar power (CSP) solar tower plants.

The article gives an overview of molten salt thermal energy storage (TES) at commercial and research level for different applications. Large-scale molten salt storage is a commercial technology in the concentrating solar power (CSP) application.

Completed the TES system modeling and two novel changes were recommended (1) use of molten salt as a HTF through the solar trough field, and (2) use the salt to not only create steam but also to preheat the condensed feed water for Rankine cycle.

Solid particulates have three main advantages in comparison to other conventional technologies such as molten salts [16]: they are chemically inert and stable beyond 1100 °C, they can store energy over a greater temperature range (effectively increasing storage density in a sensible energy-based system) and they are expected to be low-cost .

To meet the demand of miniaturized distributed solar energy supply and overcome the problem of solar discontinuity, this study innovatively combines mid-temperature molten salt energy storage system with solar thermal photovoltaic system and proposes a novel concept of molten salt energy storage-solar thermophotovoltaic integrated system.
