A supply side tap is a connection that is made to the busbars or conductors on the line or utility side of the main service disconnect. The line side tap the simplest way of interconnection when installing a PV system that exceeds the 120% rule.

Load-side tap connection: This is applied when no circuit breaker slots are available. The wires are connected directly to the existing wires between the electrical panel and (on the load side of) the main breaker. Some utilities do not allow this connection or do so only if a professional electrician approves it.

Solar Ready Residential Service Panel. The photo shows a Siemens “solar ready” service panel which is produced as a response to the need for easier connections with PV systems. This panel design constitutes a line-side tap. A separate set of busbars, rated at 60 amps, is supplied for connecting to an inverter with a set of breakers.

When a main is added to the feed through panel, the meter-main panel can essentially be treated as if no feed through panel was connected. Tapping at the feed through conductors would be considered the end of the bus and the 120% rule can be applied.
