The proposed model aims to determine a suitable design of a hybrid renewable-gravity energy storage system (RE-GES) and a hybrid renewable-battery energy storage (RE-Battery) considering techno-economic performance indicators; such as loss of power supply probability, life-cycle cost, and levelized cost of energy.
Compressing and decompressing air introduces energy losses, resulting in an electric-to-electric efficiency of only 40-52%, compared to 70-85% for pumped hydropower plants, and 70-90% for chemical batteries. The low efficiency is mainly since air heats up during compression.
The chapter examines both the potential and barriers to off-grid energy storage (focusing on battery technology) as a key asset to satisfy electricity needs of individual households, small communities, and islands.
Thanks to recent technological advances, which have made large-scale electricity storage economically viable, a combination of solar generation and storage holds the promise of cheaper, greener, and more reliable off-grid power in the future.
